Mini Movers Case Study

Introduction:

MiniMovers is an Australian removalist company that has been providing relocation services for over 25 years in Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. It all started with two guys and a ute, and has become a national organization employing many employees.

MiniMovers, unlike many other removalist companies, employ all of their own people and in doing so, not only control the quality of the move, but also ensure the professionalism of the staff that they send to homes and offices.

MiniMovers offer a full range of packing materials supported by a delivery service which includes, packing and unpacking as well as home and office moves. MiniMovers currently services over 1000 customers nationwide each week.

The Business Challenge:

Like many companies in the industry, until approximately five years ago, MiniMovers undertook some in-house training through a strong internal training system.

Their efforts, however, could not be benchmarked as they were not aligned to the nationally recognised industry standards and their assessment practices were not necessarily consistent across the country. Nor could their assessment processes be termed high quality in terms of fairness, validity and reliability.

The development of high quality Customer Service skills were also added as an important consideration of these new processes, as the individuals undertaking training would be the ‘public face’ of the company for many years to come. Staff retention rates was also an issue as with many companies in the removalist industry and staff turnover rates were high.

The Solution:

MiniMovers engaged Transqual to partner with them in their efforts to realign their training system. The process started in Brisbane with Transqual mapping the existing in-house training to the nationally recognized Certificate III in Transport and Logistics.

Tranqual staff also assisted MiniMovers trainers to further develop their presentation skills and to better understand the National VET System, competency based training and the principles of assessment. In doing so, Transqual quality assured the MiniMovers trainers and carried out nationally consistent assessments of the workers themselves.

Transqual also provided compliance training through the delivery of Medium Rigid License training as well as a range of other courses, including workplace health and safety awareness and fifi rst aid training.

The Results:

For Minimovers, the partnership arrangement with Transqual has enabled them to improve the outcomes of their in-house training and assessment by benchmarking it to nationally recognized standards, through Training Package qualififications.

The process has also led to the development of highly skilled internal trainers for MiniMovers and national consistency in assessment practices. MiniMovers and Transqual have worked to develop a removalist workforce who are not only valued by the business, but who know that they are professional in their dealings with the public and are recognized and rewarded accordingly.

This in turn, has led to a reduction in staff turnover to a more stable workforce as demonstrated recently when many of the Sydney based staff moved to Adelaide to assist with the opening of the Adelaide office.

Quote from MiniMovers:

“The partnership that we have forged with Transqual has enabled MiniMovers to remain at the forefront of new and exciting developments in the transport industry. Transqual have assisted MiniMovers by making sure that the qualifications that we are providing to our staff are current and to the highest possible standard.

The wide range of Units of Competency that are provided in each qualification has meant that MiniMovers, with the assistance of Transqual, has been able to create task relevant training and assessment programs. The training helps guarantee service delivery standards for the future of MiniMovers and more importantly the MiniMovers employees. Mike O’Hagan’s, founder and owner, greatest pleasure is seeing non skilled employees gain worth through the completion of meaningful qualifications to help them move up the internal career path or to set them up for their own future outside of MiniMovers.”
